Why are User Experience Designers great with fashion?

Our favorite UX blogger and long-time friend Lis is helping spread the word that professional IT women everywhere are not only smart, but fashionable too!

UX and Fashion
Let’s be real. There are about 5 people out there that even know what a user experience designer is (For those that don’t, user experience designers are professionals that takes the customer/user point of view into account when designing service experiences, website flows and screens, and products. Think about when you are at the spa and someone brings you a drink at just the right time. That isn’t chance, it’s a well designed user experience!). So, now that you know what user experience is, we can talk about what it is about UX (short for user experience) designers that makes them great with fashion. It’s easy! They know how to tell a story with their look.

As UX designers, it is our job to understand how our designs are perceived by others, as well as what our designs are saying to others. That’s part of what fashion is all about, right?… Sharing an outfit to portray a certain story. With each look one wears, they are able to craft a story for those that look at them. This is even easier to do well when you understand how others perceive your look. For example, when people look at you and are able to call your outfit casual that is one thing,  but when they look at you and are able to tell themselves a story about who you are, then you are really getting through to them. UX Designers get this, and that is why we are not only great at designing websites and products, but also at putting together some amazing outfits (which is, of course, why Jess and Gita are using their talents here).

So that’s the secret. UX Designers are great at fashion, because we are great at understanding perception and at storytelling. Go us!
