This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Modsy. All opinions are 100% mine.
Max is getting more and more mobile every day. I feel like she’s going to start crawling before we know it. Which means the deadline for us to baby proof is drawing ever nearer. Since we also haven’t changed our furniture since we moved to New York six years ago, I figured this a good opportunity to do a complete re-haul of our living room.
To be frank, unlike styling an outfit, decorating a room does not come easily to me. I think my hang up is the fear of commitment. Even if I purchase my items at inexpensive furniture retailers, the price tag is still nothing to sneeze at. Heaven forbid you buy an expensive piece, and realize once it’s in your house that it actually doesn’t match the rest of the existing decor as well as you imagined. Because of this I have always been really apprehensive about doing full room makeovers and am less likely to to take risks when it comes to decorating.
Every time I watch one of those home decor show, I always imagine myself in it. Wouldn’t it be nice to have a husband-and-wife or twin-brother team take all your requirements and design preference, and magic it into a turnkey design? Although my favorite part of the show is definitely the final reveal, I’m all about that moment when they pick which design option they’re going to go with.
Well thanks to Modsy, I can have my own exciting “which design am I going pick” moment. They helped me visualize my home decor plans with a 3D model of my living room. This model even takes into account existing pieces of furniture I plan on keeping.
Read on for my full experience with Modsy and to see the finished design of my living room.
So how do you get started with Modsy?
You start the process by sharing your space and project requirements with Modsy. This includes taking photos of your existing room as it is and sharing floor plans, if you have it. For me, the project requirements has multiple layers since our living room needs to serve multiple purpose. The design needs to be:
- Baby friendly (no sharp edges or anything that can be hazardous to an infant)
- Include a working space for hubby since he works from home
- Be able to accommodate sleeping for two guests
Next, you’ll take a style quiz so the Modsy designers can get a feel of your preference. Lastly, you can let them know if there are any existing furniture pieces that you’re planning on keeping, so they can include it in the model.
Pro-tip: if you live in an apartment building, you can always email your building manager for the floor plan. Pay attention to the helpful tips on how to take measurements and what angle to take the photos in.
To be completely honest, it took me a bit to get started because I was feeling self-conscious about sharing my messy living room. I managed to clean a bit, but really you don’t need to, especially if you have your floor plan handy.
When will you get your first round of design?
Depending on which Modsy package you go with, the first round of design will come in 4-8 days. I was soooooo excited to get mine, you guys. I’ll show you both below, but I already have to caveat that I have more heart for Design #1. I don’t know why I never thought of putting hubby’s work desk farther away from the window, but it makes so much sense since he always complains about the glare on his monitor. I’m also a fan of the idea of using an ottoman as a coffee table. Sure the round table of Design #2 has no “sharp edges” but I just feel more secure with a soft ottoman.

Can you make changes to your design?
Absolutely! All plans allow for fine-tuning and revision to the design. The plan that I went for, Modsy Premium, even allows for unlimited revision. If you want to make small tweaks yourself without the help of the designer, you can do it using the 3D Style Editor Tool.
I’m still in the process of fine tuning my room design. I really like the layout of Design #1, but there are a couple of furniture tweaks I want to make. Instead of going the sleeper sofa route for guest sleeping accommodations, I wanted to see what it would be like if we tried for a regular sofa plus a convertible sleeper chair. I’ll keep you guys updated on design revisions.
So what’s next after the you’ve got the design that you like?
Once you’ve got a design you like, the next step is to make it a reality. One thing I forgot to mention is that you can be really specific on where you’d like your furniture from. I’m more budget conscious with my decor, because let’s keep it real why spend a lot of money on a nice couch when the cat and the baby is going to throw up on it anyway. Modsy not only make furniture shopping easy through their one-stop-shop, but they also make it easier on your wallet with exclusive discounts. I gotta say, I CANNOT wait to make my Modsy design a reality.

Baby proofing is definitely important but can be very tough. I love the idea of an overview of what furniture can be in what area and what works together.
This sounds really cool! I don’t have a baby but I can only imagine how hard baby-proofing everything is.
I don’t have a baby yet, but I imagine this would be pretty hard to do.
I had never heard of this at all until reading your blog post, but now I want to suggest it to all of my mama friends and mamas-to-be. Such a genius idea!
