How to Fit a Lounging, Play, and Office Space in One Living Room

Living in New York City, you get used to small spaces. I wouldn’t exactly call our one-bedroom tiny. But the addition of a rambunctious one-year old sure has a way of making the space feel really small.

Our living room now not only need to be baby-proof, but it also had to serve a multi-purpose. There needs to be a designated work area for my hubby since he works from home, a play area for Maxine, and of course a place for the whole family to lounge and relax. Oh did we mention that we sometimes have out-of-town guests? So the room also needs to accommodate sleeping for two.

So when we decided to redecorate our living room, with the help of Modsy, we knew we had to get creative. We became big fans of things like furniture that collapses or serves double purpose. Our chair folds out to a cot, the baby’s high chair collapses when not in use, and our ottoman doubles as blanket and linen storage.

Our apartment lease is expiring and we we’re waffling between staying or moving. Prior to redecorating, we were leaning heavily towards moving to a two-bedroom prior. But I think now we’re going to stay another year. If I’m being completely honest, the initial motivation is because moving is no fun and we will probably delay the inevitable for as long as possible. Plus this new living space layout check all of our boxes, and thus tipped the scale towards staying.
