NYFW Recap: Leanne Marshall Fall / Winter 2015

February 20, 2015

Some of you that are not fashion nerds (but are TV nerds) may recognize the name “Leanne Marshall” — and that’s because she’s the winner of season 5 of Project Runway. Leanne was a favorite of mine that season, so I was very excited to see her show. As a mega fan of Project Runway, I’m always happy to see former contestants parlay their 15-minutes of fame into something real (not that the show was un-real).

But enough of the Project Runway gushing and on to Leanne’s collection. There was a lot of sheer material, flowy fabrics, and some sparkles. All the pieces also had Leanne’s signature feminine sensibility. Far from being show pieces, every look that went down the runway would belong in any fabulous fashionista’s closet. Well…maybe with skin-colored slips underneath some of the more sheer gowns. Because, you know, not all of us are comfortable leaving the house with just pasties and sparkly hot pants underneath sheer dresses.

Read on to see the some of my favorite look from the show.

NYFW Recap: Desigual Fall / Winter 2015

February 17, 2015

Desigual fashion shows are always a lot of fun to attend — and seems like a lot of fun for the models too, as there were tons of smiles on the flirty models walking down the runway. In true Desigual fashion, of course there were also tons of prints and vibrant colors. Boring is definitely one thing that this fashion show is not.

Read on to see the entire line-up from the show.

NYFW: Day 1 Outfit

February 16, 2015

Zara Reversible contrast shopper

Ah Fall/Winter New York fashion week: I am sorry to say, you’re not my favorite one of the year. Mostly it’s because I’m not a fan of your single digit weather. Thankfully last Thursday’s weather hadn’t quite got that bad (can’t say the same about today and the rest of the week). Still I had made up my mind that I’m going to dress (mostly) practical that day. Sensible chunky boots, neutral tan, and black was on the menu for the day.

Recipe: Patron Milkshake

Milkshake

What could be better than a milkshake?!?? A milkshake with spiked with Patron XO Cafe, DUH! I decided to add the sprinkle covered chocolate rim in order to make these a little bit more photogenic for the blog.

Gray Daze

Gray Daze

I used to think that the sun had to be out in order to get the best photos for the blog. Now I’m starting to realize that a little bit of overcast actually help the pictures come out better. I know what you’re thinking, this doesn’t make any sense. I mean how could photos look good without light aka the sun?!? That’s the thing, there IS light on gloomy days too, it just catches in a different way. I’ve learned that if you are patient enough to wait for your photographer to shoot from the angels you will eventually find that sweet spot and voila!

Totes Awesome!

February 10, 2015

Tote bags sold at Nordstrom

Back when I lived in Texas, my trusty little Scion was my primary mode of transportation. Which means I had the luxury of my car trunk as “extra storage” for all the stuff I need throughout the day. Fast forward a few years later, the subway (and my short little legs) is now how I get around. Since I can’t just store my gym duffle in my car any more, and this home girl is not about to schlep two bags around town all day, my everyday purse now has to serve dual purpose. It has to be nice enough to pair with my work clothes, but roomy enough to fit gym shoes and other essentials.

Enter the large structured tote bags to the rescue! These bags have the “formal” shape that compliments any professional (or business casual) attire, while also giving you the space to store all the stuff you might need for a post-office workout. The double whammy of space and structure combo make the totes a grown-up girl’s must have.

Read on to see some of our favorite work-to-gym totes.

A Dilemma

February 9, 2015

white dress

I’ve always liked the ‘idea’ of owning a white dress. Everyone who wears them always looks so clean and chic, at least to me they do, and yet when I try a white dress on I’m never 100% feelin’ the way it looks on me. Mostly because when I buy white it ends up being semi see-through. I know that has a lot to do with cost i.e. cheaper dress equals cheaper material equals see-through fabric. But alas until I can fully commit to a white dress I can’t dish out the cash for the really, REALLY nice quality, not yet at least.

Camo and Red

February 5, 2015

Nasty Gal Camo Jacket

Can’t think of a better color to go with camo than red, which happens to be one of my favorite color. Know another color that goes along with camo? Shurubbery green. Probably should have considered that before I took my blog photos in front of these shrubs. I’m kind of blending in a little too much with them LOL.

Scattered

February 4, 2015

After seeing this wall of red dots, I knew we had to stop and take blog photos. It totally went with the way I was feeling all day, like my thoughts were all over the place, unable to keep them organized, scattered everywhere. Just like the wall. Funny how things work out.

Opening Ceremony Cat Sweater

Call it discriminatory, but I’ve always been partial to skirts and dresses (over pants). Not only is it easier to wear, but for someone who is 4’11” without heels, it’s also much easier to shop for. Thus my closet definitely has far more dresses than pants.
Unfortunately in the wintertime, my dresses just don’t get as much wear, especially the short sleeveless variety. When it’s 25° and or under, just looking at them gives me the shivers. Well thank god for heattech tights from Uniqlo. Pair them up with my dresses, plus an oversized sweater on top, and I’m ready to go.

Happy Groundhog Day! It looks like Punxsutawney Phil was spooked by his shadow, predicting six more weeks of winter — NO! Instead of dwelling on Phil’s prediction, I’m just going to pretend it’s Spring instead.

Valentine’s Day isn’t necessarily a favorite holiday of mine. I don’t loath the celebration of love or anything, I just don’t like being forced into it. Crowded restaurants, over priced food and drinks, feeling rushed because they want to give your table to the next reservation (yea I’m talking to you).

Empire State of Mind

Maison Scotch Faux Fur Coat

Have you guys seen the series Empire? It’s quickly becoming my new TV guilty pleasure. My favorite character of the show is named Cookie. Aside from being super fabulous and not the b**** you want to mess around with, Cookie is always adorned in fabulous fashion. The coat I’m wearing on this post reminds me of something she would wear, so I got to calling it the Cookie coat. Turns out I wasn’t the only one who thought that. Because when I went out this past weekend for my birthday, my friends were calling it the same thing. I guess there’s a reason we’re friends — great minds think alike.

Snow Play

January 22, 2015

I was really surprised to see how much Bear loves walking through the snow. When we get out to one of the lakes, her tail starts wagging and she runs around in circles. She pretty much looks like a child pumped up on candy and adrenaline. It’s funny and super cute at the same time. A down side for me is despite the booties and jacket, she still manages to harbor that wet dog smell once we get back home. Needless to say we are keeping pet shampoo in biz this winter.

Hope everyone has a great Thursday!

Outfit Combo: top: H&M tee, Saks Fifth Avenue BLACK knit and fur vest (similar here and here), and Burberry cashmere check earmuffs, bottom: rag & bone skinny stretch jeans, shoes: Tory Burch snow boots (old, fun style here and here)

Heat Wave

January 20, 2015

Back when I was in the Air Force, I had this room-mate that was from Michigan. We were stationed in Germany at the time, and being a Cali girl, I still wasn’t 100% used to the snow. So the point of this back story is my girl, Jeni, would roll to the store with me in shorts and a sweatshirt. I’d be like ‘Girl you’re CRAZY’, it’s cold, where are your pants, and jacket. Well, believe it or not the tables have turned AND I am now the crazy person that thinks 35 degrees is warm enough to venture out of the house sans jacket — what is the world coming to?!??

Tomboy In Vans

January 19, 2015

Uniqlo Cashmere Blended Chester Coat

I used to have this rule that I only wear sneakers when I work out. Well I’m slowly and surely changing that. It started when I was traveling in Italy. When you walk more than three miles on a daily basis, there was little option other than working sneaker into your everyday ensemble.
Then during the holiday break, I found this super cool Vans sneakers that was on sale. It reminded me of the stuff the boys wear when I was in high school. Never one to shy away from borrowing from the men’s side of the closet, I decided to take the challenge and incorporate the sneakers into my wardrobe.

Frosty

January 15, 2015

I like big scarfs, and I can not lie, HAHA get it because I’m always wearing big scarfs and it’s cold … Never-mind. As I stated in my pervious post here, just because I’m new to Minneapolis, and I’m not used to this much snow-ie cold, doesn’t mean I get a free pass to hibernate all winter. I mean shoot, I’m already getting white enough as it is, #needatan. After scouring the web, and stalking on Instagram, I found that a lot of people were going to Minnehaha Falls now that it’s frozen. Gotta say, the place was really awesome. It’s so crazy to be able to walk on water, yet find places (not anywhere I walked because I’m too scared) where the water is still flowing between gaps in the ice CRAZY! I’m sure after a while I’ll be like yea, yea, yea everyone knows this, but for now as a newbie I’m like WHOA.

Milly leather sleeved man's coat

Time and time again, I’ve heard comments from people that New Yorkers seem to wear exclusively black in the wintertime. I do think there is some truth to that. Black is a universal, easy to wear, color that goes with pretty much everything. Most people may not have a red or pink coat, but they probably have a black one. So when winter time comes and people are donning their jacket to bundle up, it gives the impression that all of a sudden everyone collectively decides to wear black.

Cozy

January 13, 2015

One of the fun things I’ve learned during my first Minneapolis winter is that life outdoors doesn’t stop. I did a lot of exploring (and getting used to the cold) outside this past weekend and saw people walking on the lakes, ice fishing, sledding, etc. Yea it’s cold here, but that doesn’t mean I need to hibernate all winter. Now instead of just finding yummy food places, I will be exploring the winter activities for myself and my son. Stay tuned!
