Black & Brown

January 17, 2012

Our friend and fellow fashion enthusiast, Ciso, shares his view on on one of the original fashion challenge: combining black and brown.

Should you wear those brown Aviator boots with that black or grey shirt? Do the black and brown rules even apply anymore? I ask myself these questions from time to time, prior to me deciding on what to wear. I personally think black and brown or even grey and brown pairs extremely well with each other. I certainly prefer over the unadventurous blue and brown combination.

To be clear I’m no expert when it comes to fashion. Actually, I consider myself to be a Banana Republic conservative, but I like to think the black and brown combination gives my style an edge. I think it’s safe to say that any variation of black and brown or grey and brown is no longer a fashion faux pas. So don’t second-guess yourself or your style. You decide!

Outfit Combo: black shirt from Sovereign Code, grey shirt from Banana Republic, jeans from Guess, shoes from Steve Madden, watch from Fossil.

A few days ago my Jeffrey Campbell Lita Cat Tapestry bootie came in the mail. I immediately fell in love with them. Naturally the shopping-reptilian part of my brain is compulsively pushing me to get more Jeffrey Campbell shoes. I must have more! But which ones?
Well my birthday is coming up in less than two weeks, so I may just get all four MWAHAHAHA! *evil laugh*

Why are User Experience Designers great with fashion?

January 9, 2012

Our favorite UX blogger and long-time friend Lis is helping spread the word that professional IT women everywhere are not only smart, but fashionable too!

UX and Fashion
Let’s be real. There are about 5 people out there that even know what a user experience designer is (For those that don’t, user experience designers are professionals that takes the customer/user point of view into account when designing service experiences, website flows and screens, and products. Think about when you are at the spa and someone brings you a drink at just the right time. That isn’t chance, it’s a well designed user experience!). So, now that you know what user experience is, we can talk about what it is about UX (short for user experience) designers that makes them great with fashion. It’s easy! They know how to tell a story with their look.

Triple Denim

January 4, 2012

Another one of my 2012 resolution is to experiment and take on more fashion risk. I believe that you can’t call yourself a fashionable unless you’ve landed on the worst dress list at least once. Because that would mean that you are too safe—and safe is so boring!

Denim on denim has always been a risky look that not everyone can pull off well. So I thought I would step it up a notch by going triple denim! What do you guys think? Do the denim pieces compliment each other or is it a big ‘ol hot mess fiasco?

Outfit Combo: Textured Heart Skirt from Rory Beca for Forever 21, Blue Chambray Shirt from Lark & Wolff By Steven Alan , Lorissa Pump from Sam Edelman, Laroux Denim Convertible Crossbody from Matt & Nat.

We are making some yummy hors d’oeuvres known as little cucumber boats! I sliced the cucumbers and scooped out all the seeds then used this Persian Yogurt recipe for the filling. Then I spruced the look up by placing the cucumbers over a sliced grapefruit. Here are a few more items to ring in the new year at home in style.

*Gasp* Denim on Denim???

December 22, 2011

Ever since Jess wrote the original blog on Denim on Denim, I’ve been obsessed with putting together an outfit that pulls off the denim on denim look. To break up the monotony of the denim on denim, I added a pop of color with the red scarf and lipstick.

So what do you guys think? Was this a successful denim-on-denim look?

Outfit Combo: Denim Shirt from Urban Outfitters, jeans from Levi’s Curve ID, vintage scarf and belt, boots from Forever 21.

Tights v. Leggings

December 20, 2011

I was asked recently what the difference was between tights and leggings—and what to wear when. Since this is actually not the first time I’ve been asked the question, I thought this subject deserved it’s own blog topic. What is the deal with tights, leggings, and for that matter jeggings and treggings? Yes, you heard me right on the last one. The legging is one portmanteau* loving fashion trend.

DIY Gift: Vodka + Blueberries + Limes

December 19, 2011

DIY Holiday Gifts
If you are looking for a fun, easy, and inexpensive gift to give out to friends and family how about surprising them with some holiday spirit (get it?). A few days ago, I picked up some mason jars at the store, placed some blueberries and sliced limes inside, then poured the Goose vodka on top. After letting the fruit infuse with the vodka for a couple of days, I tied the jars with bows and prepared them for delivery! My original plan was to remove the fruit from the jar and poor the liquid into bottles. After many considerations, I decided to leave it as is; it has a unique visual appeal. Enjoy!

Gloomy Weather, Go Away!

December 16, 2011

Triple Black
So since miss Jess was all bougie yesterday, I thought I’d dress it way down for today’s blog. Weather has been rather gloomy lately, enough to make a girl feel a bit sulky. So in an effort to “warm” myself up, I’ve been cozying up in comfy clothes to work: soft sweaters and snug flat boots.

Enough bad weather already. Sunshine, it’s time to come back out to play—I’m ready to bust out my new American Apparel petticoat skirt.

Outfit Combo: Sweater from American Apparel, skirt from Forever 21, necklace from Old Navy, boots from Steven By Steve Madden.

Holiday Shopping: The Gift That Gives More

December 14, 2011

Charity Gifts
The holiday season is all about giving right? So why not give a gift that benefits more than just the people on your gift list. If you are racking your brains thinking about what to give that person that has everything they want and need—dad-in-law, if you’re reading this, yes I’m talking about you—consider making a donation in their name as a holiday gift.

There are tons of sites out there that can help you do this.
After much googling, I found that the best site to go with is Mercy Corps. I especially like them because they have a tool that will suggest a charity idea based on who you’re donating the gift for and what their interests are. Their donation gifts start at just $35 and go to a surprisingly wide range of causes, from helping provide clean water to reintegrating a child soldier.

Holiday Shopping: Let’s Splurge

Fun with Duckies
It’s getting cold out—even down here in south Texas. But the extreme chilly weather doesn’t stop us from having fun at the park. Okay, I lied… The “frigid” weather on this day was really a frosty 63 degrees F. That’s cold enough weather for Texans to bulk up in comfy sweaters and super-soft jersey scarf.

Holiday Outfits: All That Glitters

December 5, 2011

All That Glitters
It’s that time of the year where we shop, dress-up, dine, wine and spend time with our families. One of my favorite trends this holiday season has to be the glittery sequin tops, skirts, dresses and shoes! I honestly can’t get enough of the glitter and for me more gold – the better. I have a few holiday parties to attend and these are a few outfits inspired partially by what I am going to be rocking out (pictures to come) and what I covet (duh). What will you be wearing to your holiday party?
