Fuzzy Fur

BSable Lauren Faux Fur Coat

It may not be as bad as Jess’s Minneapolis weather, but New York City got pretty cold and blustery last week. On days like these, you don’t really feel like going outside, let alone dressing up pretty. I definitely wore my puffer coat one too many times — it sure is functional, but not the prettiest thing in the world.
So on the weekend, I decided to glam it up and bust out my fuzzy faux fur coat. I got the best of both worlds: looking good and staying warm.

Two Times

January 7, 2015

jess afshar

I wear a lot of the same stuff over and over for a few reasons: 1) I try to invest in nice pieces so need to get my cost per wear out of them and 2) I don’t have an endless supply of cash to shop till I drop (le sigh). Because of all that I decided to show how a few tweaks can change the same base of an outfit into two different looks. Alright, alright, I’m not doing anything AMAZING or NEW… I’m sure everyone does the same thing (and if you don’t, you should start).

Cats and Velvet Stretch

January 6, 2015

ModCloth The Cats of Friends Sweater

Something about being out vacation for so long made yesterday, my first day back at work, especially hard. Why is that? You’d think that after a long break, one would be rested and ready to go. But it seems like the longer your vacation time is, the harder it is to go back. I’ve been spending most my vacation in stretchy pants, downing mom’s homemade comfort food. So I was feeling particularly uninspired dressing up for work yesterday morning, and not quite ready to give up my stretch pants just yet. So instead I switch the pants to skirt in luxurious velvet (I can’t be looking like a bum at work), and paired that with one of comfy sweater. Maybe tomorrow I’ll wear something a bit more structured (no promises).

Sugar Storm

January 5, 2015

jess afshar

After it snows, and all that white stuff settles on the ground, it makes me think of powdered sugar, and beignets sprinkled in it (must stop comparing everything to food). All this of course inevitably lead me to search good ol’ Google for a place that served beignets, #sopredictable. I came across Good Day Cafe in the search results, they had pretty good Yelp reviews, so decided to give the place a chance.

Gangsta Brunch

January 2, 2015

Happy New Year peeps! I hope that your 2014 was as amazing as mine and Gitas’ AND that 2015 makes all your wishes come true (fairy godmother voice). I rang in the new year with nommy Viet food from Quang Restaurant, watching movies (Hello Gone Girl), and drinking champers all from the comfort of my couch (#potatofolyfe).

Puppy Time

December 29, 2014

Switching gears a little bit today to talk puppy fashion! With all the snow and salt on the sidewalks poor Bear was having a hard time going on her walks. We would only get a few steps down the street before she would start crying and hopping around to keep her feet off the cold cold ground (SAD FACE). I tried a few different types of booties, but alas she would refuse to walk in them AND/OR try to kick them off. I finally found some that were a little bit more paw form fitting at PetSmart, PawZ waterproof dog boots. The only down side is you can’t pick and choose a color, the colors correlate with your pup’s shoe size. That’s all right because Bear will finally go on her daily walks again AND we get a lot of compliments on her cute booties!!!

Textures

December 22, 2014

I feel like the fun thing about winter is mixing all the different textures together! Flannel, faux-fur, leather, wool, cashmere, (you get it) the more layers, the BETTER and warmer! At least it is if you live in the frozen tundra that is Minneapolis.

Camel Coat, In Grunge

December 18, 2014

Uniqlo Cashmere Blended Chester Coat

If this coat looks familiar to you, it’s because you just saw it in one of my blog post last week. One of my favorite thing about this coat is the versatility of it: you can dress it up or down. With the small sizes of New York apartment closet, utility of a piece of clothing is super important. I’ve gotten to a point with my closet that I pretty much have to get rid of a piece of clothing to add more to it. So whenever I buy something, I try to consider how many different ways can I wear it. For today’s blog post, I’m dressing down the camel coat for a pseudo-grunge look.

Getting Blanket Cozy

December 11, 2014

Zara Multi Jacquard Scarf

At times, the winter chill just makes me want to go all “honey badger mode” about my fashion choices. Honey badger don’t care what she’s wearing as long as it’s warm and comfortable. Well thank god that blanket scarves are in-trend this season. Not only is it look good, it ticks of the two most important thing in my winter wear checklist: warmth and comfort. I snagged this baby for a super sweet deal during black friday, which makes it even better!

Layers on Layers

December 10, 2014

I’ve discovered an up side to my first (seemingly never-ending) Minneapolis winter… THE SUN! On the days that the sun is out it feels nice to go outside and walk around (as long as I add a few layers first, DUH). I even see people outside jogging, total show offs but whatever the point is I don’t have to hibernate all winter long, I can actually go out and explore the new area! Turns out I live near a lot of cute coffee shops, local not that chain crap (you know who you are). On this particular day we tried out Dogwood Coffee Bar. Gotta say upon walking in the smell was AH-maz-ing! I tried the Indonesian brew (shout out Gita) and lil man got a hot chocolate. AND they have pastries from Rustica Bakery which we def ordered as well (#fatkidconfessions) because you can’t have coffee without pastries, CAN’T DO IT.

Classic Camel Coat

December 9, 2014

Uniqlo Cashmere Blended Chester Coat

I’ve been looking for a camel coat for awhile now — and I finally found what I’m looking for at Uniqlo. My favorite part about this coat is the cashmere blend that gives it the layer of warmth and extra soft fuzziness, while keeping the jacket light. Also, there’s something vaguely early 90’s about the cut that I can’t get enough of.

Winter White

December 4, 2014

While every other blogger (and their mom) is online posting super sassy fall pics and quips… I’m over here like uh it’s winter and it’s COLD! And unlike the brave souls who strip down to take snow pictures, I’m once again sayin’ ‘it’s effin’ COLD’.

Flies and Fuzzies

December 3, 2014

Topshop Textured Faux Fur Front Jumper

I am a fuzzy lover — I just love pretty much anything soft and fuzzy. If it was really possible to wear a kitten tee, I totally would. Unfortunately since there is no such thing, I gotta settle for the next best thing: faux fur.
This Topshop jumper not only has a super soft faux fur panel, but it’s in one of my favorite go to color: gray. But wearing gray on a gray winter can sometimes be a bit too… well, gray! So to combat the gray blandness, I have make sure I add a pop of color here and there, like a bright pink lipgloss and super festive fly earrings.

Purple Rain

December 2, 2014

Though it looks like I’m channeling a winter version of Prince circa 1984 (or MJ), I didn’t plan to wear purple (ERR eggplant?) on purple like this, I SWEAR! It’s just that I wanted to wear the hat, this jacket was already out, my son was in the hallway sayin ‘HURRY UP’, and the rest is well… pictured above.

Cyber Monday Picks

December 1, 2014

Cyber Monday Picks

A lot of people (including me) probably consider Monday to be the worst day of the week. For fifty-one weeks of the year, poor ol’ Monday gets none of the love and all of the hate. But there is one day where it gets to be the star of the week: Cyber Monday!
Maybe it’s the procrastinator in me, but I’m usually in too much of a food coma to be an effective shopper on Black Friday. And I definitely am not fan of the crazy shopping crowds of that day. Then around Sunday evening I come to the realization: crap, I missed on the weekend deals. Well thank god for the second chance known as Cyber Monday.

Read on for find out more about the Cyber Monday picks I’ve got my eyes on.

Pho Real

November 25, 2014

Now that it’s super COLD, snowy and freezie (yup, I made up another word) I’ve been on a mission for Pho. It’s basically my go to meal in the winter months. I love how warm the broth is and the jalapeños and siracha clear my sinuses — esp if I’m sick — all in all Pho is basically the perfect cold weather meal (well that and RAMEN!). Being new to Minneapolis means that I need to ask people where to go AND trust the Yelp reviews. The later is hard for me because a lot of reviewers have lead me astray and lets face it some of them are probably friends with the owners, BUT you never know unless you try (right?!??)… which is exactly what I did.

Leopard Spots

November 24, 2014

Voodoo Vixen vivienne leopard pencil dress

What a change in weather a week could make! I swear, I don’t remember it being that cold when I left for Italy (and gratefully it wasn’t very cold in there either). But it sure was a different story when I returned. Last week was so nippin cold! It almost got me a bit worried that a Buffalo-style snowstorm is close to making it’s way to NYC. My first panicked thought was: oh sh!t, I still have a few fall items obtained pre-Italy that I haven’t worn yet, like my Voodoo Vixen vivienne leopard print dress. Thankfully, there was a break in the cold weather on Sunday and my faux leather jacket was all I needed to keep myself warm. I know it’s going to get back to being colder, and something even worse soon. Is praying to the fashion gods to keep the snow at bay for at least a few more weeks considered wishful thinking?

Rome

November 21, 2014

Last stop ROMA. So much to see and so very little time. The architecture, history, views, and awesome weather, left us kinda speechless. Which was fine because we had a tour guide do all the talking for us. YES (le sigh) we were the American tour group following the person holding up a stick with a flag. Let me say this though… TOTALLY WORTH IT. Yea we had headphones, and followed a leader ON THE FLIP SIDE we had access to areas the normal tourists couldn’t go into so SUCK IT!

AND NOW… it’s back to REALITY. Till next time #jetsetters
