Denim and Black

Brandy Melville high rise distressed denim

I’m taking a page out of Jess’s book and going with a black themed outfit for this post. Kinda funny since she went with a printed maxi dress for yesterday’s post — it’s like we’ve got the role reversed!

I love this recent short shorts find from Brandi Melville. I’m a little wary of showing too much belly when wearing crop tops. Which is why high-waisted shorts are a perfect match for them.

Floral Maxi

Floral Maxi

I found this floral chiffon maxi dress and immediately thought to use it as a swim cover because it buttons in the front. After wearing it to the pool with these denim cut offs, I got the idea for an outfit with booties. I like the flow-y element that the dress brings once you leave the bottom half un buttoned. Makes it a little bit more fun than just wearing it as a maxi.

Do you have any closet items that you like to re-mix into something else?

Major Repeat

These distressed boyfriend jeans have been on major repeat since I first got them. I’ve been dressing them up and down almost every weekend. In general I tend to live in distressed denim, it’s just so comfortable. I am not ashamed to admit that the majority of my shopping budget is spent on jeans… AND it is worth every penny.

What’s your favorite closet must have?

Daniel Silverstain

Daniel Silverstain Carnival Sleeveless T-Neck

I love New York City. Sure sometimes I complain about the crazy real estate prices and loud construction noises, but often times I get little reminders about why I love the city that validates my reason to move here. Case in point: last Friday. I was having a pretty tough day at work, still at the office at 5:30pm (by the way, my office has summer Fridays so pretty much everyone is gone by 2pm). I was feeling pretty down on myself when I noticed an email in my inbox letting me know about the Daniel Silverstain sample sale. My immediate thought was: who the f is that? Well after a quick search online, I found that he is very talented designer. I love the clean lines and pseudo-androgyny of his design. Plus they will have champagne at the event, so can’t hurt, right? Well actually it sort of hurt my wallet — the kind that hurts real good. I didn’t quite buy the store, but I did snag myself the carnival sleeveless t-neck (featured on this blog) and the neo-mesh t-shirt. What can I say, nothing fixes Friday working blues like a little retail therapy.

Tank Dress

June 22, 2015

Lou & Grey tank dress

Happy Monday, hope that everyone had a great Father’s Day weekend! We decided to check out the Stone Arch Bridge Festival at the river front. Which was really fun, and not too crowded due to the rain earlier in the day. They had live music, artist booths, festival food, and a vintage car show. I loved seeing all the local artisan booths and trying food from local restaurants, all while walking along the river front. It’s our first summer here in the twin cities and I’m slowly learning that there are so many fun things going on as long as you are willing to get out and explore.

What did you do this weekend?

Viris Zamara Dress

You know that feeling when you found a piece of clothing in your closet that you love but haven’t worn in awhile. It’s been so long, you almost forgot you have it. And when you come by it, you’re thinking: why don’t I wear this more? It’s the perfect summer dress with bright colors and pattern, and just the right playful length. I also realized that even though I’ve owned this dress for over years, I don’t think it’s ever been featured on the blog. How is that possible? Well now that the I’ve “rediscovered” this dress, it’s is definitely going to be in heavy rotation this season.

Black and Gray

Black and Gray

The latest edition to my monotone wardrobe is this black Panama hat. I was super excited to find it because I have been searching for a black hat in my price range for a while. I’m all about wearing hats during the Spring/Summer months because I don’t like to have the sun hit my face (say no to sun spots and wrinkles). Some might say I am a tad obsessed, but I see nothing wrong with being over protective when it comes to your skin.

Does anyone else live in hats?

Brandi Melville Distressed Denim Shorts

If you’ve been in a cab in New York recently, you’ve probably seen the See Your City advertisement. Their tagline touts that for visitors, New York City is a vacation of a lifetime; but for the lucky 8 million resident, it’s only a subway ride away. Well I count myself among those lucky 8 million and do sometime think that I don’t see enough of the city. Plus, why let the tourist have all the fun?
Spurred by my brother in law’s visit a few weekends ago, I’ve been doing quite a bit of sight seeing lately. I decided to continue this trend by visiting the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space museum this past Sunday. I can officially say I’ve been been on an aircraft carrier and seen a space shuttle up close — wahoo, that’s two things I can cross off my bucket list.

Some Neon

Some Neon

I really love this Kimchi Blue jumpsuit that I found. The problem is, it shows some serious side boob (that’s an understatement) without an under shirt. And because I’m pretty sure  #toplessthursdays isn’t a real thing (unless it IS and I’m just, cringing, old)  — I decided to pair it with a neon sports bra (stop judging, it’s all I had) and sneakers. In the future I’m definitely looking at getting prettier, lacier, non athletic tops that I found here and here to wear with this, and anything else that might show some skin. (#whyigottabesoprude)

How would you wear this jumpsuit?

For Love and Lemons Chi Chi Kimino

It’s been a long time since I’ve worn this kimono. I can front and say it’s because of the weather, but really it’s mostly because the kimono is a tad intimidating. When wearing it, especially considering that it’s adorned with frilly laces, you always tread the line of looking like you’re wearing lingerie (and not in a good way). For today’s outfit, I’m pairing the kimono with black/dark grey monochromatic colored items, which I think combats the danger of looking like I walked out in my unmentionables.

By the way, if you guys are loving the jewelry pieces I’m wearing in this post, you can try it out yourself for free. Yep, you read that right, you can try out the bracelet for free courtesy of Rocksbox jewelry subscription service. Just make sure you enter the code mimiandchichixoxo when you check out.

Clean

Rotation

The latest accessory addition to my clean/colorless wardrobe is this beauty from Jord Watch. I love taking a unique piece, like this two tone wooden watch, and mixing it with a simple look. It keeps the focus on the watch, which was my goal when putting the initial look together. I decided to pair a chambray top, distressed black denim, and heels, keeping the accessories to a minimum since the focal point was the watch. Because it’s a men’s watch I think it would pair well with a feminine dress and sneakers too. Add some aviators and a clutch, and you are good to go!

Hope everyone is having a great ‘hump day’!

Watch Out

June 2, 2015

Jord Watch - Eli watch in maple

It has been long time since I’ve started wearing watch again. The last time I was a regular watch wearer was probably in middle school, back when Swatch and Baby-G ruled the world.
Nowadays my I use my iPhone, which is tethered to me 24/7, to tell time. The watch no longer serves a functional purpose, and is purely arm candy. Since my teenage years, my taste has also changed a bit.

When I first discovered Jord watches, grown-up arm candy is what came to mind. The watch is made out of wood — how sophisticated (and cool) is that! The fact that it could tell you time is just a side bonus. I love that the neutrality of the wood makes it easy to pair the watch with different outfits and layer with other accessories. As any New Yorker with limited closet space can attest, versatility is key in selecting items to add to your wardrobe.

Street Art

The place that I take Bear to for her hair cut recently moved to a new location/neighborhood called the Nord (North) East. I had never ventured out to this area, but I’m happy that I finally did because of all the amazing building murals. We stopped to take photos here only to find other options around the corner. Needless to say, moving forward Bear’s groomer appointment will now go hand in hand with a photo shoot!

Hope that everyone is having a great week so far, it’s almost Friday!

Frying Pan

May 27, 2015

Like probably most people, I think I look better with my tan on. I’m not sure if it’s the shadows of the building or what, but it just seems like it’s much harder for me to stay tan living in New York City as compared to when I lived in Texas. So in order to maintain the tan I got from my Puerto Rico vacation, I’ve been making it a mission to play in the sun on weekends (with proper SPF protection, of course). If you’re a skin doctor, you’re probably cringing at that statement. But I just can’t help myself — my clothes looks so much better on darker skin.

This past weekend I went to visit my sister and lucky for me it was the same weekend as the Culinaria foodie events (#fatkidfolyfe). She had an extra ticket for the ‘taste of Mexico’ event, hence my fancy green plastic bracelet, so I tagged along. We got to try tacos, sopapillas, and cookies — did I mention it was all you can eat! All those goodies plus tequila tasting, oh YEA. I think next time I’m going to plan my visit around this foodie fest so I can go again.

Poetry in Motion Maxi Dress

Someone pointed out to me that it’s technically not summer until the summer solstice happens, which this year is going to be on June 21st. Even though it’s still more than a month away, I feel that summer is here already, don’t you? And nothing says summer more than bright colorful flowy dresses, like this Poetry In Motion dress from Shop Mint Julep. Unfortunately for my shorty pants height, the maxi dress is a bit long for me, even in my highest heels. But the dress is so gorgeous, I had to take it for a spin (quite literally) as soon as it came in the mail. Now the biggest decision is what length should I alter this for: high heels or flat sandals? Ah, life of a short girl is so tough!
