Disco Fortuneteller

May 23, 2012

I’ve been told before that I look “disco disco” when I wear my American Apparel accordion pleat pant. So if my outfit is already disco and I add a jeweled turban headband to it, what does that make me? A Disco Fortune Teller? Ha!

Prior to this, I’ve been a turban virgin – and it’s way past due for me to try out the trend. My #1 rule of trying out fashion trends, especially ones that smell “fad-ish”, is not to commit too much money into it. I got this turband headband from ASOS for under $20. Although it was a lot of fun to try out, I can’t say that turbans are going to be in my outfit repertoire. Let’s just say for now the turban is still reserved for special occasions only haha ☺.

Outfit Combo: turban from from ASOS (find similar here and here), accordion-pleat pant from American Apparel, clutch from ASOS, open clic 120 patent-leather pumps from Christian Louboutin (find similar here and here).

Blogging The Runway 2012

May 21, 2012

This past Saturday I had such a blast at San Antonio’s first ever Blogging The Runway event. The show, organized by San Antonio Fashion and Beauty Bloggers (SAFABB) and San Antonio Fashion Industry Alliance, featured outfits from local boutiques Langford Market and Carol Reyes, as well as one of a kind designs from San Antonio’s own Laura Varella.

The event is not the stereotypical fashion show. Each boutiques styled six looks that they feel best represents this summer’s trends and then presented them on the “runway”. Afterwards, the bloggers was given an opportunity to get up close to take pictures and ask questions. So yours truly wasn’t just in the front row, I was able to get up close and all up on the model’s business. Just like P’triqe said: “if you’re not in the first two rows, you dont matter” HA!

Sip, Savor & Shop

May 19, 2012

Anyone that knows me know that shopping and eating good food are two of my favorite things. So I was super excited when my friend Heather, a.k.a. Geekette Bits, scored me free tickets to Culinaria San Antonio‘s Sip, Savor & Shop event.

Heather, her sister Melody, and I sipped and snacked on yummy delicious goodies provided by fourteen local San Antonio eateries. While filling our tummy, we also checked out the fashion display presented by Guess and bottles on sale in the silent auction section.

Dress to Impress

May 18, 2012

Last night, I attended the Dress to Impress event at Garment District Boutique, which was done in collaboration with KC Pride. I must say, it was a fantastic show. Great music, beautiful people, silent auction and a raffle to benefit the Dave Anders Scholarship Fund. While at the event, we enjoyed the high fashion, some yummy cocktails (I tried Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood) and amazing entertainment! Without a doubt, you must go with us to the next one and experience it for yourself.

Because it was ‘dress to impress’ your girl had to go all out and fro the hair. This incredible afro is inspired by my new addiction to RuPaul’s Drag Race. After watching the queens rock it out on the runway, I started to realize that hair is part of your total look aka your style. And because of this revelation, I will start thinking more about how my hair can accent my looks too!

I Ain’t Scared of No Print

May 15, 2012

They say that printed pants make you look fat and that you should stay away. Well you shouldn’t listen to everything they say — especially since I don’t really know who “they” are (who knows I might’ve even made them up).

Avoid the “fattening” effect of printed pants by pairing them with the right top. Try pairing them with a plain fitted top. Or you can pair them with a vest cut just at the right angle to give the illusion of a smaller waist.

Outfit Combo: printed pants from Urban Outfitters , black tank from The Limited (find similar here and here), denim vest from Madewell, straw fedora hat from Urban Outfitters, Open Clic 120 patent-leather pumps from Christian Louboutin (find similar here and here).

Rock the Block Fashion Show

May 14, 2012

I felt like a true fashionista last week. We were invited to several shows, and between finding the right outfit and the right direction, I found myself wishing for a dictation app to keep up the blogs. On Friday, husby and I attended the 3rd Annual Rock the Block Fashion Show at the Kansas City Power and Light District. The show featured original looks from the following local designers and boutiques: Christian Micheal, Denim Couture, Envolve Boutique, Imagery, Label, Clothier, R Treasures Boutique, Reign, Rich Chic Couture, Threads, Two Chic Blvd., Zafar Salon and Spa & Boutique. These entrepreneurs and KC fashion icons definitely amped up the excitement and creativity gravity toward their stores and styles. I am blown away from what I’ve seen thus far and can’t wait to see more… I think I am fashiondicted!

Excited to attend the next event this coming Thursday, Dress to Impress at the Garment District Boutique Collective.

Outfit Combo: dress: Collective Concepts via Piperlime, jacket: Zara, shoes: Fendi, ring: YSL and bag: Eel Skin clutch from Korea

Whitney Manney Runway Show

May 13, 2012

This past Thursday, Kim and I attended Whitney Manney’s senior year design collection, the Rythmic Decay. This young and upcoming designer’s urban looks, geometric shapes and generous inclusions of colors was eye-popping from every corner of the room. Her model’s rocked it and brought her collection of unique ready to wear silhouettes to life.

Whitney says that the girls who wear her clothing are ambitious, determined and have no barriers. That aesthetic definitely came through in the show. She is scheduled to show in Kansas City Fashion Week this September. So be sure to check her amazing collection and let it inspire you!

My Sister’s Chanel

May 10, 2012

Last week I went to Houston to visit my parents (and sister came too). I was so happy that I got to hang out with her for a whole week. Since she lives on the other side of the country, I don’t get to see her very much. As it turns out, since the last time I saw her, she has a purchased her very first Chanel. To top it off, she got the pair of Chanel booties on consignment, at near perfect condition, for only $600. I was totally J! I have to admit I did think about stealing them for myself (hehe sorry sissy). But alas, I resisted the temptation and resigned to just borrowing them for this blog.

Outfit Combo: striped mini dress from American Apparel, Greenwich blazer from Nasty Gal (find similar here and here), booties from Chanel.

FK (fat kid) Brownies

May 8, 2012

WARNING… You’re gonna be tempted to bake after reading this!

While trying to figure out a fun and unique snack I accidentally invented the ultimate brownie, soon to be known as the FK Brownie (thanks Betsy! patent pending ^_^).

As I was pondering the how, I realized that Oreos fit perfectly into the cupcake cups and if I incorporated additional layers of savoriness to it, it will make it ever more appealing. I also love peanut butter (and SNL taco town skit), so I glued two Oreos with peanut butter then applied an extra level of PB on top just to get the point across. After thinking brownies couldn’t get any more kick a#% than this, I added a layer of cookie dough. And from there my FK Brownies were born. The end result is gooey layers of FK heavenly deliciousness.

Don’t just take my word for it… Try it for yourself, follow the instructions below and let your senses go cray cray!!!

I Heart Maxi

May 3, 2012

I have to admit, I was not always a fan of maxi skirts. As an extra-petite girl, I was worried that wearing them would make me look even shorter. Plus, I thought that these skirt was one of those fad trends that will quickly die away.

Well I was wrong! Maxi skirts have been popular for awhile and it looks like they’re here to stay. In addition, I also learned that paired with the right heels, the skirt can make your legs look longer. So you guessed it, I have now amassed quite a collection of maxi skirts.

My favorite kind of maxi skirts right now are the sheer types. Since you can mix and match the layers underneath, you can work them into your ensemble regardless of the season.

Outfit Combo: maxi skirt from Vero Moda, short-sleeve bodysuit from American Apparel, Rock Lock crossbody bag from Valentino, Open clic 120 patent-leather pumps from Christian Louboutin (find similar here and here).

Nail Design Tutorial: Tropical Neon Nails

May 2, 2012

Looking at photos of Jess’s vacation to St. Lucia got me super j. The photos look so beautiful, they really made me want to go there. But alas, I don’t think that a tropical beach vacation will happen for me — at least not anytime soon.

Since I cant go to the beach, I’m bringing the beach to me by doing a tropical nail design on my toes. This cute nail design is super easy to do! Read on to check out the step-by-step tutorials.

Fashion for a Cause

April 29, 2012

Everyone deserves quality healthcare and fashion and when these two causes are celebrated together, it brings so many great people together. This year, Truman Medical Center hosted their the Seventh Annual Fashion for a Cause at the newly built Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. As we walked across the red carpet, I was amazed by the turnout, the gorgeous models mingling with the donors, and the whisper of ‘Who are you wearing?’ echoing throughout the floor. Overall, it was one of the best fashion shows I’ve been to and a great way for us to get involved.

Casually Preppy

April 26, 2012

The ‘button up + mini skirt’ outfit combo is hands down one of my favorite preppy outfit matches. When I’m late for work or I can’t think of anything to wear, I’ll usually go for either this look or the ‘jeans + tee + blazer’ combo. It’s a great way to look put together, without looking like you’re trying too hard.

Although I do find that this combo can get bland and boring. So to keep it interesting, I make sure to pair the outfit with a statement accessory (like my Valentino cross-body). Or, another way to kick it up a notch is by choosing bright contrasting colors, like what I’ve done here.

Outfit Combo: short sleeve button-up shirt from American Apparel, skirt from Forever 21 (find similar here and here), thrifted belt (find similar here and here), flats from Michael Kors (find similar here and here).

Dinner At The Monterey

April 24, 2012

The hubby and I recently visited The Monterey for a super delicious dinner. This restaurant is known for it’s eclectic and unusual menu — rare gem in San Antonio and a haven for adventurous foodies like me. To match up with the mood of the dinner menu, I thought I’d kick up the sillyness factor in my outfit. The conversation with my hubby before we left went something like…

Me: How do I look? Do I look silly?
Chris: (Chuckles and eyes the giant red bow on my bun) Yes..
Me: Good, thats what I was going for!

Outfit Combo: shorts from byCORPUS via Urban Outfitters, bustier top from Urban Outfitters (find similar here and here), jacket from Zara, wedges top from Kenneth Cole (find similar here and here), hair bow from American Apparel, clutch from Chanel.

Fashion Interviews

April 23, 2012

What an amazing weekend. We were invited to help interview some amazing and rising fashion talents for the upcoming fall Kansas City Fashion Week (KCFW) show. The best part of the interviews, being re-energized by their courage and resolve of these future fashion stars. Their tenacity, courage, and creative juices were ever present as they shared their inspirations and visions. I anticipate their clothing and styles will bring KCFW to a whole new level and in the process, they will make their mark known in this industry. Oh man, September can’t come soon enough!

Crazy for Coral

April 20, 2012

Not sure if it’s because I recently got back from vacation or because I got some new contact lenses, but lately, I am feelin coral pieces. I love the warm, clam, and beachy feeling I get when I see these colors. Here are a few of my favorite finds and those that catch my eye. Don’t be surprised if you’re inspired to rock the coral too!
